Ordering your passport
If you don’t already have one, securing your passport should be your #1 priority. Follow these steps to ensure you’re ready to fly.
1. Start Early
Passport processing can take anywhere from 8 to 11 weeks for routine service and 5 to 7 weeks for expedited service (with an extra $60 fee). With our travel date fast approaching, apply as soon as possible to avoid last-minute stress. Remember, many countries, including Japan and the UAE, require that your passport be valid for at least six months beyond your travel date, so double-check your expiration date if you already have a passport.
2. Where to Apply
Here are some common locations where you can apply for your passport:
Local Passport Office
No appointments needed: First come, first served.
Photo services: Many offices offer passport photo services on-site.
Processing times: Routine (8–11 weeks) and expedited (5–7 weeks).
University Services (e.g., Texas Global: Passport Services)
If you’re near a university that offers passport services, such as Texas Global, you can take advantage of:
Walk-in service (no appointment necessary).
On-site passport photo services.
The same processing times: Routine (8–11 weeks) and expedited (5–7 weeks).
Emergency Passport Services (this is a last resort!)
If your departure date is less than two weeks away, you may qualify for an emergency passport. These are handled at regional passport agencies, such as in Dallas or Houston. Requirements include:
Proof of travel within three days of your appointment.
An expedited processing fee.
A pre-scheduled appointment made at least two weeks before departure.
3. Required Documents
When applying for a passport, be sure to gather the following:
Proof of U.S. citizenship: Original or certified birth certificate, naturalization certificate, or an existing passport.
Government-issued ID: Driver’s license or state ID.
Passport photo: Check size and format requirements if taking your own. Many offices provide photo services.
Application form DS-11: Complete this form ahead of time to save time at the office.
Payment: Check the application fees online.
4. Make Copies
Once you receive your passport, make at least two copies:
Keep one copy with you (separate from your actual passport) while traveling.
Leave the other copy with a trusted family member or friend back home.
Upload a digital copy to a safe, password protected location, accessible on your phone.
This will make it easier to replace your passport if it’s lost or stolen during your trip.
5. Pro Tips
Track Your Application: Use the U.S. State Department's online tracker to monitor the status of your passport application.
Stay Calm: If you encounter delays, know there are options like emergency services to help you get your passport in time.
