Devin Walker, Phd is dedicated to creating transformative educational opportunities that empower students, particularly Black students, to embrace their identities and explore the world. After 10 years at The University of Texas at Austin - he founded World Walker, LLC in 2023.
As the recent Director of two high-impact Centers at UT-Austin: The Heman Sweatt Center for Black Males and Global Leadership and Social Impact and professor of a 500 student course entitled, "Cultural Intelligence in a Global Economy," Devin extols the importance of developing the global skillset necessary for leadership in the 21st century.
Dr. Walker's diverse upbringing and extensive global experiences underpin his perspective on equity and leadership. His recently published book, "Historically Underrepresented Faculty and Students in Education Abroad: Wandering Where We Belong," aims to disrupt the deficit-based narratives surrounding underrepresented students within education abroad, and instead, provide solutions based on his experiences leading diverse students around the world.
I absolutely love traveling back to the continent of Africa. I have a particular soft spot for South Africa, Ghana and Senegal!
1:0: We believe in providing a platform where Black students can embark on a journey of self-discovery, celebrating their strengths, identities, and potential through transformational learning experiences abroad.
2.0: We envision a future where Black students have access to immersive international internships in Dakar and throughout West Africa fostering a sense of global citizenship. Professional internships will help bridge the gap of the diaspora and build a vibrant network of Black Americans who have worked with small, emerging, and Fortune 500 companies doing business in and out of West Africa, thus promoting trade, business, and development between the two regions."
Global Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging: We value diversity in all its forms and are committed to supporting historically marginalized groups, including Black students, while fostering inclusivity and belonging. We strive to create spaces where individuals from different backgrounds, cultures, and identities can come together to learn, share, and build bridges of understanding.
Exposure, Experiential Learning, and Bridge Building: We believe in the power of exposure to diverse perspectives, experiential learning, and building bridges between cultures. Our programs provide educational experiences that foster understanding of historical, cultural, and economic ties, enabling participants to engage in meaningful collaborations.
Cultural Identity and Heritage: We recognize the transformative power of exploring one's cultural roots and the impact it can have on personal growth and identity development. We aim to provide opportunities for Black students to reconnect with their West African heritage while reflecting on their "Americanness" and fostering a sense of belonging in both cultures.
Economic Collaboration and Community Empowerment: We promote economic empowerment and community development by facilitating trade, business, and partnerships between Black Americans, West Africa, and the Middle East. We believe in harnessing the economic potential of cultural connections to support the growth and prosperity of communities around the globe.
Sustainability, Responsible Travel, and Local Empowerment: We are committed to sustainable and responsible travel practices that preserve natural and cultural heritage. We emphasize community empowerment by supporting local initiatives, businesses, and entrepreneurship. By focusing on sustainability, we aim to create long-term positive impacts that benefit local communities and foster economic independence.
Empowerment, Leadership, and Social Impact: We empower Black students to become leaders and agents of social impact in their home communities and through international connections. We provide opportunities for skill development, leadership training, and networking, encouraging participants to utilize their knowledge and networks to foster economic collaborations and drive positive change.
Through a commitment to these values, World Walker aims to strengthen our current collaborations and contribute to the shared goal of fostering economic partnerships and cultural exchange between Black Americans and West Africa. Together, we can create a more inclusive, interconnected, and prosperous future for all.
