Maximizing the Impact Store for Study Abroad: A Guide to Closing the Gap
by Christianna McAfee
Studying abroad is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but let’s be real: it’s expensive. If you’re like me, you’ve probably spent more time calculating your remaining balance than packing your bags. That’s where the Impact Store became my secret weapon. I’m here to share how I approached using this tool to close the gap for my trip and how you can use it for yours. Whether you’re gearing up for a Spring program or a future adventure, these steps can help you reach your fundraising goals with purpose and a little creativity.
Step 1: Build Your Dream Team
Start by creating lists or groups of people you can reach out to. Apple even has a feature to list them together properly. Think family, friends, recent graduates, alumni, hometown professionals, and anyone you’ve built a solid connection with. These are your champions – people who are genuinely excited about your goals and willing to support you.
“Pro Tip: This list is gold. Treat it with respect. Don’t abuse your connections; instead, take them on the journey with you. Share updates, milestones, and personal reflections. People invest in YOU as much as they do in your trip.”
Step 2: Make the Ask (with Heart)
Once your list is ready, it’s time to reach out. Draft a heartfelt message explaining your goals and your need for support. Personalize each note with their name, your connection, or something memorable about your relationship. Make sure to:
Include your Impact Store link.
Set a reasonable due date.
Be genuine. This is not the time for copy-paste energy.
Prepare yourself for a mix of responses. Some people may ignore your message (life happens!), while others might let you know they can’t help right now. That’s okay. Don’t remove someone from your list unless they explicitly say no and you’re certain you can’t revisit them later for a similar cause.
Step 3: Gentle Reminders
Follow up a day or two before your set due date. Lives are busy, and sometimes people just need a nudge. Keep the tone light and grateful—every bit of support counts, whether it’s a donation or a share to their network. Gratitude goes a long way, and showing appreciation in advance can make all the difference.
Step 4: Say “Thank You” Like You Mean It
Here’s where you really shine. After someone supports you, follow up with at least two personal touches:
Before Your Trip: Send a handwritten thank-you note. Yes, handwritten. It’s a small gesture that speaks volumes. Share your excitement and what you hope to achieve during your trip. Take your time with this; it’s something your supporters will cherish.
After Your Trip: Give your supporters a glimpse into your experience. This can be a thoughtful message, a cool photo, or even a small souvenir. (Magnets are a lifesaver—affordable, unique, and easy to pack!) Let them know you thought of them beyond the initial ask. It’s not just about saying thanks; it’s about showing it.
Study Abroad Pro Tips:
Magnets: Seriously, they’re the best. Compact, cheap, and personal. They make perfect souvenirs for family, friends, and sponsors.
Social Shares: If someone can’t give, encourage them to share your Impact Store link. Every share expands your reach.
Be Persistent, Not Pushy: Fundraising is as much about building relationships as it is about raising money. Keep your tone positive and understanding.
Using the Impact Store is about more than just hitting your fundraising goal. It’s about creating a community around your dreams and making your supporters feel like they’re part of the adventure. I can’t wait to see how you use these tips to make your trip possible. Remember, every step—from the first ask to the final thank-you—is an opportunity to share your story and inspire others. Safe travels and happy fundraising!
